The detachable wooden handle that allows you to lift and move both the pot and its lid is a true stroke of genius. The Sarpaneva cast iron pot has won several design awards, including the silver medal at the 1960 Milan Triennal.
This stunning casserole was designed by Timo Sarpaneva, whose father was a blacksmith, in 1960. It became such a favourite that it was featured on one of a series of postage stamps celebrating Finnish design. The Sarpaneva pot is a combination of tradition, functionalism and aesthetic appeal. It is a basic object for the home which you can take straight from the oven or hob to the table. Its distinguishing feature is the detachable wooden handle which is used both to carry the pot and to open the lid. The excellent cooking qualities of the enamelled cast iron complete what is one of the most beautiful cast iron pots available.
